Chapter 17

The dinner with the Gardiners had gone wonderfully. Darcy was glad that she had family that would not embarrass them. It was also beneficial that they were friends of his aunt and uncle, which would make it easier for them to accept Elizabeth.

Darcy had completed everything in preparation for the wedding. The settlement was done this morning, and the marriage license was purchased yesterday. The one thing he needed was to speak with Colonel Fitzwilliam. Wickham was in the area, and he wanted to know how to handle the situation of Georgiana coming to the wedding. Darcy had written to Richard’s base and was hoping to hear back by tomorrow. He did not want Georgiana to attend knowing that Wickham was still around, but he knew she truly wished to attend.

Colonel Fitzwilliam met with his commanding officer; the meeting was brief, so he decided to take advantage of it and sneak off to Hertfordshire to check on the little fortune hunter that tricked his cousin. He could not believe a woman could be as fantastic as Darcy claimed and needed to make sure Darcy was making the right choice. Colonel Fitzwilliam arrived at Netherfield and was greeted by Bingley. “Hello, Richard—what a welcome surprise! Have you come for the wedding?”

Deciding that he would not offend Bingley as he would Darcy, he was going to be truthful. “The reason I am here, Charles, is that I wish to meet Darcy’s intended and see for myself if she is worthy of my cousin or if she is another one of those woman grasping for Pemberley. What can you tell me about her?”

Charles knew that the Colonel, although kind and humorous, was very serious and to the point when the matter called for it. “I am on my way out to call on Miss Jane Bennet, and I will tell you on the way, that is if you wish to accompany me. Miss Elizabeth will be there.”

The Colonel agreed and went to freshen up while the stables prepared him a fresh mount. The men were saddled up when Bingley asked, “Does Darcy know you are here?”

“No, he does not. This was a spontaneous decision. So, tell me about her.”

“She is very smart, and although she is told by her mother that she is not as beautiful as her sister, most would disagree. She likes to challenge Darcy, and truthfully it is fun to watch, until their discussions get too heated.”

The Colonel looked curiously at Bingley. “What do you mean, heated?”

“At first, Miss Elizabeth did not like him, and rightfully so, thus she would question anything he would say and spin it around to a different meaning. Then he would do the same to her, and by the end I didn’t know if they were truly fighting or whether they were about to kiss each other.”

Just then, they heard some noise in the woods and then a shot go off. Right after, they noticed a yellow gown running toward them.

“Miss ELIZABETH!” yelled Bingley. He dismounted and ran toward her as the Colonel did the same and pulled his weapon.
